51st City of Turin Trophy & 2024 Italian Gliding Championships 18 m

The Aero Club of Torino organized its 51st international soaring competition City of Turin Trophy, launching from the Turin/Aeritalia airport. The competition is an annual event since 1962. The Sport Commission of the Aero Club of Italy combined the race with the Italian Gliding Championships 2024 for 18 m class sailplanes.
The competition, which took place across two separate weekends, comprised three race sessions (on the 1st, 5th and 6th of April). The races planned for the other days were cancelled or declared invalid due to bad weather.
The City of Turin Trophy 2024 was organized as a single Open Class covering 18 m gliders. At the end of the trophy, from the Open Class final results the 18 m sailplanes were extracted, to form the scoreboard of the Italian Gliding Championships 2024, 18 m Class.
A total of 18 Italian pilots took part in the trophy under the supervision of the International Gliding Commission of the FAI (Fédération Aéronautique Internationale) and valid for the IGC ranking.
Andrea Ferrero, flying a single-seat Schleicher AS 33E, was the convincing winner for his regularity. Ferrero, from the "Aero Club Adele Orsi", came second in the first race and was third in the other two valid races. Thanks to this result, Ferrero was proclaimed Italian Champion 2022, 18 m Class. The races of the Turin Trophy 2024 had short-to-medium distance courses (226.75 km, 232.46 km and 234.09 km).
The three pilots racing for the Amateur League category were classified in the following order: first Domenico Bosco of the Aero Club Torino flying a Rolladen-Schneider LS6, second Carlo Alberto Bosi of the Aeroclub Volovelistico Milanese (Voghera) in a Schleicher ASW 20L and third Maurizio Gallo Bruno, another member of the Turin Aero Club, piloting a Rolladen-Schneider LS3-17.
