Turin / Caselle Airport Downgraded

The Caselle (Sandro Pertini) airport has been downgraded from ninth to eighth category by ENAC (the national Civil Aviation Authority) a body within the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport. The not unexpected decision results from the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) parameters related to the traffic data and the potentiality of the airport. Paradoxically the Turin airport has been registering constant passenger increases year after year. In 2024 there was a 3% traffic increase over 2023, totalling some 4,7 million passengers.
The real effect of this downgrading are not clearly foreseeable, apart from the reduction of the fire fighting resources and is a gift to nearby airports such as Malpensa. It could also limit the national and international competitiveness of the airport and reduce the economic income generated by tourism. At the moment no comment has been made by SAGAT, the Caselle airport managing agency.
