La STN Atlas Elektronik GmbH di Brema, società partecipata dalla Rheinmetall DeTec AG di Ratingen (51%) e dalla britannica BAE Systems (49%), sarà suddivisa in due società, una specializzata nella difesa terrestre, l'altra nei sistemi navali. L'operazione avverrà alla fine di agosto e sarà considerata retroattiva al 1° gennaio 2003. A seguito del nuovo assetto, le due ditte si chiameranno "Rheinmetall Defence Electronics GmbH" ed "Atlas Elektronik GmbH".
Rheinmetall Defence Electronics conta di fatturare oltre 300 milioni di € nell'esercizio corrente. L'attuale azienda, basata a Brema e forte di 3.100 addetti, sarà divisa paritariamente tra le due nuove entità. L'attuale staff dirigenziale della STN Atlas Elektronik GmbH continuerà a gestire l'una o l'altra delle due nuove ditte, in base alle responsabilità ricoperte fino ad oggi.
Prendendo controllo delle attività sui sistemi aerei, terrestri e di simulazione della STN Atlas Elektronik, Rheinmetall DeTec rafforza la sua posizione sul mercato degli equipaggiamenti per la difesa terrestre in Europa. Atlas Elektronik, che sarà di proprietà della BAE Systems, si concentrerà sulla realizzazione dei sistemi navali precedentemente condotti dalla STN Atlas.
L'obiettivo della riorganizzazione è quello di migliorare l'efficienza industriale sia nel campo dei sistemi navali che di quelli terrestri, posizionando entrambe le società nella situazione migliore per cogliere le opportunità del mercato e crescere. Il piano di riorganizzazione messo in atto era già stato prefigurato nel 1996, come opzione, quando Rheinmetall e BAE Systems avevano comperato la società.

STN Atlas Elektronik GmbH of Bremen, a company jointly owned by Rheinmetall DeTec AG of Ratingen (51%) and BAE Systems of London (49%), will be divided into two separate companies, one specialising in ground forces technology, the other in naval systems, to take effect upon completion (expected by end of August 2003), retroactive to January 1st 2003. The new companies will henceforth be known as "Rheinmetall Defence Electronics GmbH" and "Atlas Elektronik GmbH".
Rheinmetall Defence Electronics hopes to attain sales in excess of €300 million for the 2003 financial year. The 3,100-strong staff of the current Bremen-based company will be divided evenly between the two new organisations. The members of the existing management board of STN Atlas Elektronik GmbH will continue to manage one or other of the two newly formed companies according to their present responsibilities.
By taking control of STN Atlas Elektronik GmbH's ground and aviation systems and simulation technology units, Rheinmetall DeTec is underscoring its position as one of Europe's leading suppliers of ground forces equipment. Atlas Elektronik, owned by BAE Systems, will concentrate on the naval systems activities of the jointly owned STN Atlas.
The objective of this reorganisation is to bolster the competitiveness of the naval systems and ground forces units alike, placing both companies in excellent positions to exploit future opportunities for growth. A division along these lines was previously agreed as a possible option when Rheinmetall and BAE Systems originally bought the company in 1996.
