BAE Systems Regional Aircraft ha concordato con Transwede Airways il noleggio di tre quadrigetti Avro RJ70, che lo specialista svedese del wet lease metterà in linea, per conto di AirOne, sulle rotte che il vettore italiano sta per inaugurare verso il London City Airport (LCY). Il primo esemplare del 70 posti è appena stato consegnato e sarà utilizzato dal 19 novembre sulla tratta London City-Milano/Linate. Le consegne degli altri due velivoli avranno luogo nel dicembre 2006 e nel gennaio 2007, in concomitanza con l’inaugurazione dei voli che collegheranno LCY anche con Roma/Fiumicino, Torino e Genova.
Transwede Airways è una consorella della Malmö Aviation e, con l’arrivo di questi tre RJ70, le due compagnie svedesi avranno in servizio un totale di 13 aerei di questo tipo (nove RJ100 e quattro RJ70). Transwede utilizza già un RJ70 sul volo Stoccolma/Arlanda-LCY operato per conto della SAS. Ultimamente l’attività della compagnia si sta focalizzando sui contratti di wet lease (noleggio aereo+equipaggio) che ruotano sul London City; il nuovo accordo a lungo termine con AirOne rafforza la sua posizione di fornitore di velivoli che operano verso lo scalo nei pressi del centro di Londra. Oltre al contratto per il noleggio dei tre RJ70, la Transwede ha anche richiesto alla BAE Systems Regional Aircraft il relativo servizio Jetspares che prevede la fornitura dei ricambi in tempo reale.
Il 98% delle azioni di AirOne, una delle compagnie aeree italiane di maggiore successo, è nelle mani del Gruppo Toto, importante realtà nel campo delle costruzioni e dell’ingegneria civile. La sua rete di collegamenti comprende 25 scali italiani ed esteri, con 1.400 voli ogni settimana. Nel 2005 AirOne ha trasportato più di 5,5 milioni di passeggeri. Tutti i voli sono in code-share con Lufthansa. La flotta dell’AirOne è formata da una trentina di Boeing B.737-200/-300/-400, mentre di recente ha ricevuto il primo dei trenta Airbus A 320-200 ordinati. Quest’ultima commessa per il costruttore europeo comprende anche opzioni per altri 60 A 320, convertibili in A 318, A 319 od A 321 (Ndr: l’A 319 sarebbe perfetto per il London City). La compagnia ha dato vita nel 2006 alla sussidiaria AirOne Cityliner che utilizza bireattori Bombardier CRJ-900.
La decisione di AirOne di utilizzare il London City Airport denota l’attenzione del vettore nei confronti della propria clietela d’affari. D’altra parte, per esercitare questa tratta (che richiede un ripido avvicinamento ad una pista di soli 1.200 metri), è necessario disporre di un aereo con caratteristiche particolari di decollo ed atterraggio. BAE Systems Regional Aircraft ha collaborato con AirOne e Transwede per trovare una soluzione economicamente valida a soddisfare questa esigenza. I tre RJ70 che voleranno con i colori AirOne hanno i numeri di costruzione E1223, E1224 ed E1225.

BAE Systems Regional Aircraft has signed a lease with Transwede Airways for three Avro RJ70s, which this specialised wet lease operator is contracted to use on new routes from London City Airport (LCY) on behalf of Italy’s leading independent airline - AirOne. Delivery of the first 70-seat aircraft has just taken place and will be used from November 19 on a new route linking London City with Milan/Linate Airport. Deliveries of the remaining two aircraft will take place in December 2006 and January 2007 and will be deployed on to three other new AirOne routes linking LCY with Rome/Fiumicino, Turin and Genoa.
Transwede Airways is a sister company to Sweden’s Malmö Aviation and the addition of these three RJ70s will bring the combined fleet of the two airlines to 13 aircraft (nine RJ100s and four RJ70s). Transwede already operates one RJ70 on behalf of SAS linking Stockholm/Arlanda with London City Airport. The airline’s operation is focussed on wet lease operations concentrated at London City and the new long-term contract from AirOne further consolidates its position as a supplier of jet flight capacity at London’s city centre airport. In addition to this lease business, BAE Systems Regional Aircraft has also secured a Jetspares ‘spares by the hour’ support contract from Transwede covering the three RJ70s.
AirOne is one of Italy’s most successful, dynamic and profitable airlines and is 98% owned by Gruppo Toto, one of the country’s leading building and civil engineering groups. Its network covers 25 cities across Italy and abroad, with 1,400 flights a week: In 2005 AirOne carried over 5.5 million passengers. All flights are code-shared with Lufthansa. The AirOne fleet consists of around 30 Boeing B.737-200/-300/-400s and it has recently taken delivery of the first of 30 Airbus A 320-200s it has on order, with a further 60 on option. The airline also has a regional subsidiary – Air One Cityliner – which operates Bombardier CRJ-900s.
The decision of AirOne to enter the London City Airport market is indicative of its entrepreneurial spirit and focus on serving the business customer. However, to operate this route, with its steep approach requirement and 1,200 m runway, meant the acquisition of a new aircraft type. BAE Systems Regional Aircraft was able to work with both AirOne and Transwede to facilitate an economic solution suitable for all parties. The three RJ70s which will fly with the colours of AirOne are msn E1223, E1224 and E1225.
