La statunitense Experimental Aircraft Association, Inc. (EAA) ha assegnato al minuscolo Rocky Mountain Wings Ridge Runner il prstigioso premio “Grand Champion” – per la categoria light sport aircraft – all’annuale raduno AirVenture 2006, organizzato dall’EAA ad Oshkosh nel Wisconsin. La giuria tecnica dell’EAA ha giudicato Il Ridge Runner III, costruito con grande cura da Jim Pekola di Aberdeen, nello stato di Washington, il migliore velivolo presente sia per versatilità, creatività e prestazioni.
Il Ridge Runner è un classico biposto in tamdem con struttura in tubi e rivestimento in tela. Una delle caratteristiche più interessanti sono le ali, in posizione alta, che possono essere ripiegate rapidamente senza scollegare i cavi di controllo. L’aeroplano può essere ricoverato in un garage oppure in un piccolo hangar, e preparato al volo in pochi minuti. Le caratteristiche STOL del Ridge Runner sono veramente notevoli, con corse al decollo ed all’atteraggio tra i 15 ed i 30 metri e velocità minima di sostentamento di poco più di 40 km all’ora.
Costruiti a Nampa, in Idaho, gli aerei della Rocky Mountain Wings si sono già aggiudicati altri riconoscimenti analoghi nelle passate edizioni dei fly-in EAA di Arlington ed Oshkosh. Il Ridge Runner III è commercializzato nella versione S-LSA (Special Light Sport Aircraft), E-LSA (Experimental Light Sport Aircraft) oppure in scatola di montaggio. Experimental Aircraft Association, Inc. (EAA) awarded Rocky Mountain Wings' Ridge Runner light sport aircraft the prized Grand Champion position - for its category - at EAA’s AirVenture 2006 fly-in in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. This quality-fabricated Ridge Runner III, owned by Jim Pekola of Aberdeen, Wash., was judged by the EAA experts the best in versatility, creativity and performance.
The Ridge Runner is a classic tandem two-seater of tube and fabric construction. A key feature, the quick-fold, high wing design, allows the wings to be folded back without disconnecting any controls, so the plane can readily be stored in a garage or a shared hangar and returned to flight readiness in minutes. The Ridge Runner also boasts some of the best STOL performance in the industry. With take-off and landing rolls of between 50 and 100 feet and minimum stall speed of 26 mph, the Ridge Runner can land in some pretty tight places.
Manufactured in Nampa, Idaho, planes by Rocky Mountain Wings have also won Grand Champion at the EAA Arlington Fly-in and Oshkosh in previous years. The Ridge Runner III is available as a Special Light Sport Aircraft (S-LSA), Experimental Light Sport Aircraft (E-LSA) or as a kit.
