Con una cerimonia svoltasi sulla base di Cervia, l’Aeronautica Militare Italiana ha introdotto in servizio il primo di dieci HH-139A, una versione militare dell’elicottero medio biturbina AW 139 ordinata in 10 esemplari. Essi si affiancheranno ai precedenti Agusta/Bell AB 212 (sigla AMI HH-212) ed agli Agusta/Sikorsky HH-3F Pelican utilizzati per le missioni di ricerca e soccorso da varie basi nazionali. I restanti HH-139A – primi della versione militare AW 139M - saranno consegnati all’AMI entro l’anno.
Bruno Spagnolini, amministratore delegato AgustaWestland, ha dichiarato “siamo lieti di festeggiare l’entrata in servizio di questo nuovo elicottero, vent’anni dopo la consegna dell’ultimo elicottero all’Aeronautica Militare. Si tratta del primo importante passo nel programma di modernizzazione della Forza Armata che prevede l’HH-101 “CAESAR” al posto degli HH-3F Pelican nel ruolo Combat SAR. Gli HH-139A rappresenteranno il complemento degli HH-101 ed apporteranno un deciso salto di qualità nelle capacità operative rispetto all’attuale schieramento di HH-3F ed HH-212.”
L’HH-139A è stato acquisito come soluzione ad interim nell’ambito del programma di modernizzazione della componente SAR dell’AMI. Il nuovissimo AW 149, in fase di sviluppo (certificazione prevista nel 2013), è stato progettato per soddisfare un potenziale requisito dell’AMI per un nuovo elicottero medio Search And Rescue.
L’Aeronautica Militare Italiana è il quarto operatore militare dell’AW 139, dopo l’Irish Air Corps, la Forza Aerea degli Emirati Arabi Uniti e le Forze Armate del Qatar. L’HH-139A dell’AMI presenta un nuovo carrello d’atterraggio, più robusto ed alto rispetto al suolo, rinforzi strutturali, comunicazioni sicure, impianto IFF ed un pacchetto difensivo integrato. Il mezzo è anche dotato dei seguenti equipaggiamenti di ruolo: verricello di recupero, faro di ricerca, taglia fili, FLIR sul muso, gancio baricentrico, altoparlanti e galleggianti d’emergenza.

The first of ten Italian Air Force’s HH-139A, a military variant of the medium twin engine AW 139 helicopter, has entered operational service. A ceremony held today at Cervia Air Base marked this achievement. These helicopters will supplement ageing HH-212 (Agusta/Bell AB 212) and Agusta/Sikorsky HH-3F Pelican helicopters in the role of search and rescue operations across the nation. The remaining HH-139As will be delivered to the Air Force by the end of this year and are the first examples of the AW 139M dedicated military variant to be delivered.
Bruno Spagnolini, Chief Executive Officer, AgustaWestland, said at the ceremony “It gives us great pleasure to celebrate the operational readiness of this new aircraft, twenty years after the last helicopter was delivered to the Italian Air Force. This significant event is the first major step in support of the service’s modernization programme which will also see the HH-101 “CAESAR” replacing the HH-3F Pelicans in the Combat SAR role. The HH-139A will complement the HH-101s whilst providing a quantum leap forward in operational capabilities and cost effectiveness compared to the present fleet of HH-3Fs and HH-212s.”
The HH-139A has been selected as an interim solution for the Italian Air Force’s SAR fleet replacement and modernization programme. The all new AW 149, now under development (certification expected in 2013), has been designed to meet a potential Italian Air Force requirement for a new medium class SAR helicopter.
The Italian Air Force joins a number of other military customers who are already operating the AW 139 including the Irish Air Corps, the United Arab Emirates Air Force and the Qatar Armed Forces. The Italian Air Force’s HH-139A features an all new heavy duty landing gear providing higher ground clearance and improved crashworthiness, secure communications suite including IFF and an integrated defensive aids suite. The aircraft is also equipped with the following role equipment - rescue hoist, search light, wire cutters, nose mounted FLIR, cargo hook, loudspeaker system and emergency floatation gear.
