Transport - Ansaldo STS, AnsaldoBreda
Revenues totalled EUR 1,759 million, up 30% versus EUR 1,356 million in 2007, due to growth in both the Signalling and Systems segment and the Vehicles segment, which is steadily returning to former production volumes. The main contributors were: in Signalling, orders for the high-speed Milan-Bologna line and for ground and onboard train control systems in Italy, and contracts signed in Australia, the UK, China and India; in Systems, orders for metros of Copenhagen, Genoa, Rome, Naples and Brescia and high-speed orders in Italy; in Vehicles, various orders for trains, metros and trams for numerous Italian and overseas clients and service contracts.
Adjusted EBITA was EUR 126 million, from EUR -110 million in 2007, an increase of EUR 236 million. The Signalling and Systems segment accounted for EUR 19 million of this growth, due to greater volumes and improved profitability, while the Vehicles segment contributed EUR 217 million. The Vehicles segment registered a slightly positive adjusted EBITA compared with a loss a year earlier. The adjusted EBITA margin increased from -8.1% to 7.2% in 2008.
New orders totalled EUR 1,557 million, compared with EUR 1,786 million the previous year, which had been boosted by a particularly high value for orders secured in the Signalling and Systems segment (thanks to Naples metro). New orders secured during the period included: in Signalling, an order for onboard equipment for the French railways, contracts for Signalling and command and control systems in Tunisia, China and Sweden, an order from Trenitalia for on-board equipment, the extension of the Shanghai metro, a contract for the San Paolo metro and various parts orders; in Systems, orders for the Rome metro and a railway in Malaysia; in Vehicles, a Sirio tram for the Turkish city of Samsun and service orders.
The order backlog was EUR 4,849 million at 31 December 2008, compared with EUR 5,108 at 31 December 2007. Signalling and Systems made up 64% of the backlog and the Vehicles segment 36%.
Headcount at 30 December 2008 was 6,838, an increase of 169 versus 6,669 employees registered at 31 December 2007. This was largely due to an increase in staff in the Signalling and Systems segment for activities in the Asia Pacific region, and in the Vehicles segment under the workforce optimisation and development plan.
Energy - Ansaldo Energia
Revenues totalled EUR 1,333 million, compared with EUR 1,049 million in 2007, an increase of more than 27%. Growth in production volumes was mainly due to the work on plant-related (notably Larbaa, Batna, M’Sila and Turano) and short-term (flow) orders. Plant and components accounted for 74% of production, services 24% and the nuclear division 2%.
Adjusted EBITA was EUR 122 million, compared with EUR 93 million in the previous year, up more than 31%, due to increased production volumes and the improved profitability of some contracts in the plants segment. The adjusted EBITA margin was 2.4% in 2008, compared with 1.9% in 2007.
New orders totalled EUR 2,054 million, up 14% versus EUR 1,801 million in 2007. The main orders ncluded: in the new units segment, the supply of several turbine controllers for a number of customers, including in Congo, Chile, Russia, Hungary, Israel, Greece, Belgium, Italy and France, and combined cycle plants for sites in Italy and France; in the services segment, a contract for replacement parts for a site in Algeria, a maintenance contract for the Brindisi site in Italy and several Long-Term Service Agreements (LTSA); in the nuclear segment, on the plants side a new order from China and new orders for engineering work at a plant in Slovakia, and on the services side, additional support contracts for the reactor at the Creyes Malville plant and work on a plant in Argentina.
The order backlog totalled EUR 3,779 million at the end of 2008, an increase of 19% versus EUR 3,177 million registered in 2007. The composition of the order backlog for 2008 was largely in line with that of 2007: manufacturing and plant activities accounted for about 52%, while service activities (mainly programmed maintenance contracts) made up about 47%, and nuclear activities the remaining 1%.
Headcount was 3,285 at 31 December 2008, compared with 2,980 at 31 December 2007. In addition to normal recruitment, the increase of 305 resulted from the acquisition of Ansaldo Fuel Cells SpA, which added 56 staff.
