Il primo eemplare di serie del Citation Mustang (serial number 0001) ha volato per la prima volta lo scorso 29 agosto, un mese prima del previsto. Il Mustang è stato in aria esattamente due ore, durante le quali sono stati effettuati una serie di controlli ai sistemi basici ed all’avionica, compreso l’inserimento dell’autopilota. Sono state provate le caratteristiche di maneggevolezza dell’aereo, estrazione e retrazione carrelli e flap, attivazione dell’impianto antighiaccio oltre a verifiche sulla risposta e sulle prestazioni dei motori.
"Abbiamo un buon gruppo di lavoro per lo sviluppo del Mustang, che è riuscito a portare in volo “production unit one” addirittura con un mese di anticipo," ha commentato Russ Meyer III, Program Manager Cessna per il Mustang. "Il motivo del rapido raggiungimento della milestone va anche ricercata nell’utilizzo, già per questi primi esemplari, delle attrezzature di montaggio predisposte per la produzione di serie. Questo fatto ha notevolmente ridotto gli imprevisti e gli interventi di aggiustaggio. Anche l’installazione dei sistemi e le prove funzionali si sono svolti in modo più celere del previsto."
Tre esempari del Mustang verranno impiegati nel programma di collaudo e certificazione: il prototipo ed i primi due Mustang di serie (0001 e 0002). Il prototipo del Mustang ha volato per la prima volta il 23 aprile scorso ed ha già accumulato 230 ore di volo. Ad oggi questo aereo ha completato l’espansione dell’inviluppo di volo, lo sviluppo iniziale dei sistemi di bordo e l’esplorazione delle caratteristiche aerodinamiche. Adesso il primo Mustang di serie inizierà la proria attività per lo sviluppo e la certificazione della strumentazione di bordo.
"Pensiamo di ottenere la certificazione FAA nel quarto trimestre del 2006," ha aggiunto Meyer. "Con il precoce ingresso del primo Mustang di serie nel programma, contiamo di procedere ancora più raapidamente verso questo traguardo." La costruzione del Citation Mustang venne annunciata alla Convention 2002 della NBAA (National Business Aviation Association) ed il nuovo modello, nel frattempo, ha già ricevuto oltre 230 ordinazioni.

One month ahead of schedule, the first Citation Mustang production aircraft (serial number 0001) took to the air Monday, Aug. 29. The Mustang flew exactly two hours, performing basic systems and avionics checks, including engaging the autopilot, testing the airplane's handling characteristics, performing operative gear and flap tests, activating the de-ice system, and evaluating engine response and performance.
"We have a strong team working on the Mustang program, and they've achieved a major milestone by getting production unit one off the ground a month early," said Russ Meyer III, Mustang Program Manager. "The Mustang team laid the foundation for this success in the early assembly and use of production tooling to build these first aircraft, significantly decreasing the amount of rework and squawks. In addition, systems installation and functional testing progressed well ahead of schedule."
Three Mustang airplanes are dedicated to certification, the Mustang prototype and serial numbers 0001 and 0002. The Mustang prototype took its maiden flight April 23 and has logged more than 230 flight hours. To date, this aircraft has completed envelope expansion and the initial development of aircraft systems and aerodynamic flight characteristics. Mustang serial number 0001 will be primarily used for avionics development and certification.
"We expect to achieve FAA certification in the fourth quarter of 2006," Meyer said. "Having the first Mustang production unit enter the program early will certainly enhance our progress toward achieving that goal." The Citation Mustang was announced at the 2002 National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) convention. Mustang orders exceed 230.
