Lockheed C-121C Super Constellation “54-153” dell’USAF in esposizione presso la Charleston AFB, South Carolina, USA (1995). Il serial number fittizio è stato dipinto per ricordare il primo C-121C (il vero 54-153) arrivato a Charleston, direttamente dalle officine Lockheed, nel settembre 1955. Mr. Ken Miller, Maggiore in pensione della Riserva USAF, era presente all’evento e fece una fotografia. Negli anni successivi, egli accumulò più di 2.000 ore di volo, come navigatore, sui Super Constellation militari basati a Charleston nella metà degli anni ‘50. Il C-121C era la versione per l'USAF del Lockheed L.1049F Super Constellation, propulsa da quattro motori Curtiss-Wright R-3350 turbo compound da 3.250 cavalli, oltre 18 tonnellate di carico utile, 106 passeggeri oppure 47 barelle nella versione per trasporto feriti. Produzione totale di 33 esemplari, con serial number da 54-151 a 54-183 e numeri di costruzione da 4170 a 4202. L’intera flotta ricevette poi una nuova numerazione identificativa, con l’aggiunta di uno "0" prima dell’"1", così 54-153 diventò 40183. Il C-121C di Charleston è uno dei pochissimi esemplari ancora esistenti. In anni recenti, una ditta che produce orologi ne ha comperato un altro in California (n/c 4175 ex USAF 54-156)e lo utilizza nel circuito delle manifestazioni aeree europee. (Aeromedia)
Lockheed C-121C Super Constellation “54-153” of USAF preserved at Charleston AFB, South Carolina, USA (1995). The aircraft on dispay is not the actual 54-153 but 54-180 (s/n 4199). The fake serial number was painted to celebrate the first C-121C (the real 54-153) arrived at Charleston from the Lockheed factory, in September, 1955. That day Mr. Ken Miller, Maj USAFR, Ret. was present and took a picture. In the following years, he logged 2,000 flight time as a navigator in military Super Constellations while they were stationed ad Charleston, in mid 1950’s. The C-121C was the USAF version of the commercial Lockheed Model L.1049F Super Constellation, equipped with four 3,250 hp Curtiss-Wright R-3350 Cyclone turbo-compound engines, 40,000 lbs payload, 106 pax or 47 stretchers in aeromedical configuration. Thirtythree C-121C were delivered as 54-151/54-183 cn 4170/4202. The entire series of aircraft were later re-numbered by adding a "0" before the "1" so 54-153 became 40183. The C-121C at Charleston AFB is one of the few survivors of the type. A watch manufacturer recently bought one out of California (c/n 4175 ex USAF 54-156) and flew it to Europe. (Aeromedia)
