Il Boeing B.747-8 Intercontinental ha iniziato oggi il programma di collaudo, decollando dal Paine Field di Everett (stato di Washington), alla presenza di migliaia di spettatori. L'aereo è atterrato quattro ore e 25 minuti dopo al Boeing Field di Seattle, l'altro stabilimento principale del costruttore USA. Con questo volo è iniziato un ciclo di prove che comporterà 600 ore di volo e si concluderà entro la fine dell'anno.
Ai comandi di Mark Feuerstein, capo pilota B.747, e del comandante Paul Stemer, l'ultimo membro della famiglia 747 ha preso il volo alle 9:59 ed è atterrato alle 14:24, ore locali. L'aereo ha seguito una rotta in direzione est, sullo stato di Washington, conducendo le consuete prove iniziali di manovrabilità e prestazioni. L'aereo ha raggiunto una quota di 19.000 piedi (5.791 metri), ed una velocità di 250 nodi (463 km/h).
Il B.747-8 Intercontinental costerà il 12% in meno del suo predecessore, il B.747-400. L'aereo dovrebbe consumare il 16% in meno di combustibile, con pari riduzione di emissioni e -30% d'impatto sonoro rispetto al B.747-400. La cabina del nuovo B.747-8 Intercontinental adotta soluzioni introdotte con il Dreamliner, con superfici curve ed accattivanti per i passeggeri, oltre a più spazio per il bagaglio a mano.
La Korean Air ed alcuni clienti VIP si sono aggiunti al cliente di lancio Lufthansa, portando il portafoglio ordini del B.747-8 Intercontinental al totale di 33 esemplari. La prima consegna del nuovo aereo di linea è prevista verso la fine del 2011. Anche l'Air China ha espresso interesse per l'acquisto di cinque esemplari, ma è in attesa del via libera governativo.
L’aereo è dipinto nella nuva colorazione rosso-arancione “Sunrise”, notevolmente diversa dai toni azzurro-blu ai quali la Boeing ci ha abituati negli ultimi anni. I nuovi colori sono un omaggio agli attuali “clienti importanti” della Boeing, le cui culture vedono in questi colori un simbolo di prosperità e fortuna. Questo schema di colorazione “Aurora” verrà utilizzato solo per questo esemplare che è destinato ad essere consegnato, a fine anno, ad un cliente super VIP.

The Boeing B.747-8 Intercontinental successfully began its flight test programme today, taking off from Paine Field in Everett (Washington State), before more than several thousand employees, customers, suppliers and community leaders. The airplane landed four hours and 25 minutes later at Boeing Field in Seattle. This first flight marks the beginning of a 600 flight hours test programme that will finish in the fourth quarter.
With B.747 Chief Pilot Mark Feuerstein and Capt. Paul Stemer at the controls, the newest member of the 747 family took off at 9:59 a.m. and landed at 2:24 p.m. local time. The airplane followed a route over Eastern Washington, where it underwent tests for basic handling and performance. The airplane reached a cruising altitude of 19,000 feet (5,791 meters), and a speed of up to 250 knots, or about 288 miles per hour (463 kilometers).
The B.747-8 Intercontinental will have 12 percent lower costs than its predecessor, the B.747-400. The airplane provides 16 percent better fuel economy, 16 percent less carbon emissions per passenger and generates a 30 percent smaller noise footprint than the B.747-400. The new B.747-8 Intercontinental applies interior features from the 787 Dreamliner that includes a new curved, upswept architecture giving passengers a greater feeling of space and comfort, while adding more room for personal belongings.
Korean Air and VIP customers have joined launch customer Lufthansa in ordering a total of 33 B.747-8 Intercontinentals. First delivery of the new airliner is scheduled for the fourth quarter. Air China also has agreed to order five items, pending government approval.
The airplane is painted in a new Sunrise livery of red-orange and is a significant departure from Boeing's standard blue. The new colors honor many key Boeing customers whose cultures recognize these colors as symbols of prosperity and good luck. The Sunrise livery only will appear on this aircraft, which is scheduled to be delivered to a VIP customer at the end of the year.
