Il primo di tre Airbus A 340-600 che la Cathay Pacific Airways ha preso a nolo dalla ILFC è stato consegnato al vettore cinese. La Cathay Pacific diventa così la prima aerolinea asiatica ad utilizzare la versione a lunghissimo raggio dell'A 340. I nuovi aerei consentiranno al vettore di introdurre collegamenti ad alta capacità e senza scalo su tratte come quelle fino alla costa atlantica degli Stati Uniti. Essi sono i primi esemplari di un ordine per 13 macchine posto dalla ILFC, uno dei leader mondiali del noleggio di aerei di linea, che è anche cliente di lancio della nuova versione dell'A 340.
Rappresentante più grande della fortunata famiglia degli Airbus A 330/A 340, l'A 340-600 offre notevoli livelli di spaziosità, confort e servizi di cabina, con un raggio d'azione fino a 13.900 km, pari a 7.500 miglia marine. La Cathay Pacific ha scelto una configurazione degli interni molto spaziosa, con otto passeggeri in Prima Classe, 60 in Business e 220 in Economy. Le cabine delle prime due classi più la prima fila della classe economica sono equipaggiate con il sistema e-mail di bordo denominato Tenzing, via connessione dati USB ad alta velocità. Attualmente la Cathay Pacific è l'unica compagnia ad offrire questo servizio. Spinto da turbofan Rolls-Royce Trent 500, il quadrimotore A 340-600 non è soggetto alle limitazioni ETOPS che regolano l'utilizzo dei bimotori sulle lunghe distanze.
Cathay Pacific Airways, che dispone anche di parecchi B.777 e B.747, è stato il primo vettore ad utilizzare una flotta combinata di Airbus A 330 e 340. Il vettore basato ad Hong Kong ha già in linea venti A 330 e quindici A 340 sulla sua rete di collegamenti internazionali, ed è oggi uno dei maggiori operatori di entrambi i tipi. All'inizio di quest'anno, la compagnia ha anche ordinato altri tre A 330-300 che saranno consegnati dal 2003 in avanti. La famiglia Airbus A 330/A 340 ha colto numerosi successi di vendita nell'area Asia/Pacifico, con più di 180 esemplari ordinati da poco meno di 20 vettori.

The first of three Airbus A 340-600s Cathay Pacific Airways of China is leasing from ILFC has been delivered to the operator. Cathay Pacific will thus be the first Asian carrier to operate the ultra-long range A 340 variant when it puts it into service. The new aircraft will enable Cathay Pacific to launch high capacity, long-range direct flights as far away as the US East coast. The aircraft are the first out of an order for 13 placed by one of the world's leading leasing companies, ILFC, who was also a launch customer for the new version of the A 340.
The largest member of Airbus' market leading A 330/A 340 Family, the A 340-600 provides operators with unrivalled standards of space, comfort and amenity in each cabin class, over a range of up to 13,900km/7,500nm. Cathay Pacific has chosen a very spacious layout, seating eight passengers in First Class, 60 in Business and 220 in Economy. The First and Business Class cabins, and the first rows of the Economy Class cabin offer access to the Tenzing inflight email system through high-speed USB data connections. Cathay Pacific is currently the only airline in the world to offer this service. Powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 500 powerplants, the four-engine A 340-600 offers total freedom of flight, unrestricted by ETOPS (the rules governing the operation of twin-engine aircraft on very long flights).
Cathay Pacific, which operates also many B.777 and B.747 jetliners, was the first airline in the world to establish a mixed A 330/A 340 fleet operation. The Hong Kong-based carrier already operates 20 A 330s and 15 A 340s across its international route network, and is among the largest A 330/A 340 operators today. Earlier this year, the airline placed a firm order for an additional three A 330-300s, with deliveries scheduled to begin in 2003. The A 330/A 340 family has been especially successful in the Asia-Pacific region, with more than 180 total orders from almost 20 airlines.
