Un A 320 uscito dalla linea di montaggio finale di Tolosa, destinato ad entare in linea con la compagnia low-cost statunitense JetBlue Airways, è stato il 3.000° aereo consegnato dalla Airbus. Dall'inizio del programma, ci sono voluti 23 anni per consegnare i primi mille Airbus, solo sei per raddoppiare la cifra ed appena tre per raggiungere il traguardo di oggi.
L'aereo del record è il 171° consegnato quest'anno dalla Airbus, cosa che fa ritenere possibile un totale di 300 aerei entro l'anno ed almeno altrettanti nel 2003. Da una posizione sul mercato degli aerei di linea che raggiungeva appena l'1% delle consegne nel 1974 (il prototipo F-WUAB aveva volato il 28 ottobre 1972), Airbus ha aumentato costantemente la propria percentuale, raggiungendo il 30% nel 1998 ed il 40% nel 2001.
"Negli ultimi anni Airbus ha mantenuto una media del 50% negli ordinativi di nuovi aerei di linea, che si riflette oggi positivamente nel ritmo delle consegne. Entro il prossimo anno Airbus potrebbe produrre la metà dei nuovi aerei commerciali," ha detto Noël Forgeard, presidente e CEO di Airbus. "Siamo lieti di consegnare il nostro 3000° aeroplano alla JetBlue, una compagnia a basso costo con un livello di servizio che la pone all'avanguardia del settore" ha aggiunto.

L'A 320 è il capostipite della famiglia di Airbus "a corridoio centrale" che comprende anche il nuovo A 318, l'A 319 e l'A 321, con capacità crescenti da 100 a 200 posti. La sola JetBlue Airways ha ordinato un totale di settantasei A 320. Ad oggi, più di 1.780 aerei della famiglia A 320 sono stati consegnati a 109 operatori in tutto il mondo. Airbus ha anche consegnato, a 95 vettori, 770 esemplari della serie A 300/A 310 a fusoliera larga e, ad un totale di 62 operatori, 440 aerei a medio/lungo raggio della famiglia A 330/A 340. Ben 187 compagnie aeree utilizzano attualmente aerei Airbus; essi hanno sinora accumulato 26 milioni di voli commerciali, per un totale di 54 milioni di ore.

Airbus yesterday delivered the 3000th Airbus aircraft, an A 320 from the Toulouse final assembly line to the highly successful North American low-cost airline, JetBlue Airways. It took Airbus 23 years, from the inception of the programme, to deliver its first 1,000 airliners, just six to deliver the next thousand, and a mere three to reach this latest milestone.
The aircraft is the 171st Airbus delivery so far this year, which puts the company well on track to delivering 300 aircraft in 2002, a level which it expects to maintain next year. From delivering less than one percent of all commercial jetliners in 1974 (prototype F-WUAB flew October 28, 1972), Airbus' share has risen steadily since then, reaching 30 percent in 1998 and 40 percent in 2001.
"Airbus has been steadily maintaining its half share of new orders over the last few years and this is now paying off in terms of deliveries. By next year, Airbus should also be delivering about half of the world's requirement in terms of new airliners," said Noël Forgeard, Airbus President and CEO. "We are delighted to deliver our 3000th Airbus aircraft to JetBlue, a carrier whose low-fare, high-service product is on the cutting edge of the industry," he added.

The A 320 is the flagship of Airbus' popular fly-by-wire single-aisle family, which comprises the new A 318, the A 319, the A 320 and the A 321 and ranges in capacity from 100-200 seats. JetBlue Airways has ordered a total of 76 A 320s. More than 1,780 A 320 Family aircraft have been delivered to date, to a total of 109 customers around the world. Airbus has also delivered 770 widebody A 300/A 310 aircraft to 95 operators and 440 medium to long range A 330/A 340 Family aircraft to 62 airlines. Airbus' total operator base currently stands at 187 airlines around the world, whose Airbus fleets have accumulated more than 54 million revenue flight hours in over 26 million revenue flights to date.
