Fairchild Dornier has received certification for operations of the 328JET regional jet to 35,000 feet. In actions by the Federal Aviation Administration and the European Joint Aviation Authorities, the 328JET type certificate was amended to allow operations to 35,000 feet, up from its initial service ceiling of 31,000 feet. The new flight level authorization gives operators even greater flexibility in route planning as well as greater efficiencies that come with operating at the higher altitude. Fairchild Dornier continues to pursue additional improvements to the 328JET including certification for extended range capability, dual flight management system, ground proximity warning system and reduced vertical separation minimum.
The 328JET (design name 328-300) is the world's only 32-seat regional jet and is the first of a new generation of regional jets designed to satisfy passenger preference for jets over turboprops and to open up new markets too long for turboprops and too thin for larger jets. Fairchild Dornier's 328JET is in service in the U.S., Europe, Africa, the Middle East, China, and the Pacific Rim. In addition to its operations with regional airlines, the 328JET also flies as a corporate shuttle with several operators. When outfitted with Fairchild Dornier's unique convertible interior, corporate operators can operate the jet during the week as a shuttle with 32 seats, and then as a VIP transport with 16 first-class seats for special operations.
The 328JET has one of the largest cabins among regional jets with a center aisle height of 1.89 meters (6 ft 2 in) and a cabin width of 2.18 meters (86 in) at its widest point, which is at shoulder height for a seated passenger. The cabin also features a full galley, full lavatory, large overhead bins and underseat stowage, and large rear baggage compartment.
The 328JET is powered by twin, wing-mounted Pratt & Whitney Canada turbofan engines generating more than 6,000 pounds of thrust each. The PWC 306B engines are designed for quiet performance and reliability. The engines are controlled by a full authority digital engine control (FADEC) for efficient operation. Flight management is through the Honeywell PRIMUS 2000 integrated avionics suite with information presented to the flight crew through five 5-inch by 7-inch CRTs.
Fairchild Dornier's order book stands at 223 orders and options for the 328JET. To date, 62 328JETs have been delivered to customers around the world including AC Jet, a Delta Connection carrier, and Skyway, the Midwest Express Connection, in the United States, Hainan Airlines in China, Shell Petroleum Development Corporation in Nigeria, and Gandalf Airlines and Air Vallée in Italy.
