Eurofighter e NETMA (NATO Eurofighter and Tornado Management Agency) hanno firmato oggi a Roma un contratto per acquisire fino a 24 velivoli Eurofighter destinati all’Aeronautica Militare. I nuovi velivoli Eurofighter EF 2000 sostituiranno gli esemplari attualmente in servizio e appartenenti alla versione Tranche 1. L’annuncio giunge durante un periodo particolarmente importante sotto il profilo strategico per il programma Eurofighter e fa seguito al contratto firmato venerdì 20 dicembre per altri 25 velivoli per la Forza Aerea spagnola. Come in questo caso, i nuovi Eurofighter italiani saranno equipaggiati con avionica avanzata e nuovo armamento (ad esempio, Brimstone III e Meteor), nuovi sensori e maggior connettività.
(Ndr: Nel 1995, a seguito della caduta dell’Unione Sovietica, gli ordini iniziali per gli Eurofighter furono ridotti significativamente una prima volta: il Regno Unito passò da 250 a 232 esemplari, la Germania da 250 a 140 e l'Italia da 165 a 121. Il il 30 giugno 2003 fu consegnato alla Royal Air Force il primo esemplare di serie della Tranche 1. Il 4 agosto 2003 fece seguito la Luftwaffe, seguita il 5 settembre 2003 dall'Ejercito de l’Aire spagnolo e il 19 febbraio 2004 dall'Aeronautica Militare Italiana. Purtroppo, nel luglio 2010, durante la sua conferenza stampa al salone di Farnborough, l’allora ministro della Difesa Ignazio La Russa annunciò, nella costernazione generale, l’ulteriore cancellazione dei 25 velivoli della Tranche 3B. La dichiarazione, cui non fece seguito la doverosa ratifica parlamentare, ridusse ancora le consegne all’AMI. Si può verosimilmente immaginare che il risparmio ottenuto fu convogliato sul programma Lockheed-Martin F-35 per l’AMI. Tra il 16 marzo 2004 e il 23 ottobre 2020, l’AMI mise in linea un totale di 96 velivoli: 82 monoposto e 14 biposto, 28 dei quali appartenenti alla Tranche 1, altri 47 alla Tranche 2 e infine 21 alla Tranche 3A). Il 500º esemplare prodotto (74° monoposto della Tranche 3A) fu consegnato all'AMI con una grandiosa cerimonia allo stabilimento Leonardo Velivoli di Caselle l’11 aprile 2017, appositamente decorato con una spettacolare livrea speciale.)

Eurofighter and NETMA (NATO Eurofighter and Tornado Management Agency) signed a contract today in Rome to acquire up to 24 Eurofighter aircraft for the Italian Air Force. The new Eurofighter EF 2000 aircraft will replace the Tranche 1 aircraft currently in service. The announcement comes during a particularly strategic period for the Eurofighter programme and follows the contract signed on Friday, December 20, for 25 more aircraft for the Spanish Air Force. As in this case, the new Italian Eurofighters will be equipped with advanced avionics and new armament (e.g., Brimstone III and Meteor), new sensors, and increased connectivity.

On 30 June 2003, the first production Tranche 1 aircraft was delivered to the Royal Air Force. The Luftwaffe followed on 4 August 2003, followed by the Spanish Air Force on 5 September 2003, and the Italian Air Force on 19 February 2004. Unfortunately, in July 2010, during his press conference at the Farnborough Air Show, then-Defence Minister Ignazio La Russa announced, to widespread dismay, the cancellation of the 25 Tranche 3B aircraft. The declaration, which did not receive the required parliamentary ratification, further reduced deliveries to the Italian Air Force. It is likely that the savings achieved were channeled into the Lockheed-Martin F-35 programme for the Italian Air Force. Between March 16, 2004, and October 23, 2020, the Italian Air Force received a total of 96 Eurofighters: 82 single-seaters and 14 two-seaters, 28 of which belonged to Tranche 1, 47 to Tranche 2, and 21 to Tranche 3A. The 500th aircraft produced (the 74th single-seater of Tranche 3A) was delivered to the Italian Air Force with a grand ceremony at the Leonardo facility of Caselle on April 11, 2017, aptly decorated with a spectacular special livery.)
